It’s not too late to sign up for a week of adventure, fun and friendship in a safe and caring environment at MDNSW October Camp!
Response has been amazing with 33 places already booked. But do be quick if you haven’t reserved your place because applications close Monday, 31 August.
If you haven’t made a booking because of worries about the well-being or safety of your child or yourself at Camp, please take the time to read the Q&A below, prepared by our Client Services Manager, Renee McBryde.
We hope it will reassure you that Camp will not only be a great adventure and fun for everyone, but also a very safe, rewarding and comfortable experience.
What age groups is MDNSW Camp for?
The Camp will provide a fun and rewarding experience for children, young people and people of any age who are young at heart!
When and where will MDNSW Camp 2009 be held?
Monday 5 October to Friday 9 October at Sydney Academy of Sport & Recreation, Narrabeen next to the lake on the northern beaches of Sydney.
How much will it cost and what does it include?
The cost is $120 per person, but make sure you ask us about claiming the camp fee and travel costs through Flexirest, our Flexible Respite Program.
The cost of Camp covers ALL food and accommodation, one-to-one care (if desired) and a HUGE variety of activities appropriate to people of all ages and experience.
What is the value of MDNSW Camp?
For young people Camp offers a fun and safe experience and the opportunity to develop important life skills such as confidence, independence and social ability.
The Camp experience also promotes a great sense of self-esteem and achievement. Campers will leave with a more positive outlook on life and take with them lasting friendships and memories.
For parents, guardians and carers, the Camp provides an opportunity for respite and relaxation. MDNSW staff and trained volunteers assume all camper care, including physical and emotional support, allowing caregivers a little time to attend to their own needs.
What kind of medical care is provided at MDNSW Camp?
MDNSW Camps are staffed by medical professionals from Westmead and Sydney Children’s Hospitals. The medical professionals will dispense medications, take care of injured or ill campers, and provide general first aid.
What kind of activities will there be at MDNSW Camp?
Although each Camp is unique some common activities include music, cooking, arts and crafts, movies, dancing, talent shows, themed parties, archery, wheelchair sports, team games, trivia nights, cookouts and much more.
These activities happen in an environment that promotes:
- exploration of self and nature;
- informal interaction with peers;
- enjoyable and safe experiences with limits and supervision;
- structured reflection on camp experiences.
What about safety concerns?
Safety is the number-one priority of camp staff and volunteers, who all receive training in the special needs of children, young people and adults with neuromuscular disorders.
All activities are strictly monitored, overseen by qualified personnel, and designed to accommodate campers’ unique needs and abilities.
What is the Camper-to-Carer ratio?
Most sessions offer a one-to-one ratio between campers and trained Volunteer Camp Carers. The Camp Carer’s goal is to provide campers with a safe and fun experience while helping them develop skills, confidence, friendships and relationships.
What do Volunteer Camp Carers’ duties include?
- Attending to physical needs (dressing, bathing, feeding, transferring, toileting, turning, etc);
- reporting health problems to the medical staff;
- promoting cooperation and respect;
- encouraging participation;
- ensuring safe practices;
- participating in activities;
- and sharing an upbeat positive attitude.
