Become a Surf Life Saving Club Patroller
We’ve partnered with Coogee Surf Life Saving Club (Coogee SLSC) for a NSW first online training program, offering young people living with a neuromuscular condition the opportunity to become official volunteer Coogee SLSC Patrolling member, and hold a Surf Life Saving Award.
Once you have completed the training and assessment requirements, you will have the skills and knowledge to manage radio communications, understand important surveillance techniques and be an active Award member on Patrol, helping to keep beach-goers safe and potentially save lives!
You’ll also receive a SLSC uniform and be qualified with nationally recognised units of competency under the SLSNSW training framework, meaning you can take these skills to any other SLSC in the state.
Want to get involved? Here’s the rundown…
This is a free program that provides three, one-hour online training sessions, which cover the following key areas:
- Patrol and beach operations
- Team roles and responsibilities
- Scanning and assessing risks
- Responding to incidents
- Understanding radio systems, call signs and communication
The program also includes a practical operational requirement*, which will includes attendance at three patrols (maximum) on a Sunday morning over the Patrolling season (Jan-April 2022).
You will patrol from the Clubhouse Lower Verandah at the Coogee SLSC, gaining a complete overview of the beach and the ability to monitor conditions and the public via binoculars and radio.
Don’t worry, the Clubhouse is fully wheelchair accessible with a lift and accessible bathroom facilities. Participants will also always be supported and mentored by active members of the Patrol at each shift who will be with them at the same location. Check out the newly renovated, fully accessible, iconic Coogee Clubhouse in this video.
*The timing for practical operations will vary depending on NSW Government Health advice and Covid-19 restrictions at the time.
