When Owen Sargeant laces up his running shoes, it’s about much more than the finish line. It’s about rallying behind his son Adam who lives with Myotonic Muscular Dystrophy and supporting countless others through vital fundraising.
Myotonic Muscular Dystrophy (MMD) is the most common form of adult muscular dystrophy. Along with progressive muscle weakness, people with MMD often face serious heart complications.
Earlier this year, Adam suffered a heart attack and has been readjusting to daily life with his wife Mel and young son Charlie, all while managing the uncertainty of his condition. With no cure for MMD, many adults rely on supports like pacemakers to keep their hearts beating.
Owen has faced heart struggles himself, undergoing bypass surgery after his arteries were found to be 95% blocked. His own recovery, and watching the toll MMD takes on Adam, fuelled his determination to get involved and make a difference. Not content to just watch, Owen decided to run – to raise funds for research, a cure and better support for families living with neuromuscular conditions.
Affectionately nicknamed Owen’s “Rock N Run,” Owen started taking on marathons to raise funds and awareness for MDNSW. This year in March, at age 72, Owen proved just how far his commitment goes – quite literally – by lacing up for the Nepean half marathon.
“It was one of the hardest things I’ve ever done,” Owen said, after finishing in just over two hours. “But I didn’t stop. I knew if I did, I might not get going again.”
After training hard and rallying support from friends, family and his physio network, Owen completed the 21.1km run in just over two hours, raising more than $6000 in the process. He was also awarded a gold medal for the over-55’s category and named Performance of the Day.
“Hopefully I can make a difference. My hope is that one of the dollars I raise moves the research closer to a cure.”
Owen’s race wasn’t without its challenges. He battled fatigue, and when his running partner, Roxanne, became unwell with 6km to go, Owen made the decision to wait for her. Crossing the finish line together was a gesture that mirrors the heart of the MDNSW community: no one gets left behind. His dedication to supporting people with neuromuscular conditions has now seen Owen recognised as a MDNSW Community Hero.
What kept him motivated?
“I had some words tucked into my pocket that I read before I ran, and many times leading up to the event. It inspires me through life’s challenges. The words were said by the legendary Mohammed Ali – ‘Impossible is not a fact. It’s an opinion. Impossible is not a declaration. It’s a dare. Impossible is potential. Impossible is temporary. Impossible is nothing.’”
Owen’s commitment extends far beyond the racecourse. He used his achievements as a powerful platform to shine a light on MMD and rally support for MDNSW, turning a personal milestone into an opportunity for awareness and advocacy.
It was a moment of immense pride for those cheering him on.
“I was so proud of Adam for wearing the MDNSW shirt proudly on race day. It takes real courage to represent his condition so openly.”
Owen’s legs may still ache from the run, but his spirit is already focussed on what’s next. With a 42km marathon already in his sights, he knows every step brings him closer to helping people living with neuromuscular conditions live a more confident and independent life.
Every dollar raised helps fund life-changing programs like peer support, camps and retreats, so people living with neuromuscular conditions can live the lives they choose.
