Peers Show and Tell their best Assistive Technology

In late June, we held a Peer Connect Info Share Innovation Showcase online with 7 people attending. Each participant did a ‘Show and Tell’ of their best assistive technology (AT).

Andrew showcased his new mechanical arm fitted to his chair which was highly impressive, and allows him to feed himself and paint – other participants were amazed and looking into the application of this tech to their own lives. It was a “wow” moment, and a number of participants were empowered to research the exo-skeletal technology for themselves. Scott talked about some of the gadgets he has purchased as he prepares to move into his own SDA apartment, for example electronic jar opener, electronic curtains and an app with video to show who is at his door.

There was loads of useful discussion about NDIS reviews and useful technology, and we were lucky to have Lisa who lives with MD and works for the NDIS. She shared valuable knowledge about writing goals, categories of funding and getting good therapists to prepare reports, trials, quotes and other handy tips.
It was clear that seeing other people’s success with technology increases knowledge and motivation to explore new ways of doing things. Peers are experts in their lives and have so much great information and experience to share.
