This Christmas, we’re sharing the story of two mates, Scott and Patrick, aka The Roll Patrol!

They’re proudly representing the neuromuscular community, volunteering at Coogee Surf Lifesaving Club as Radio Surveillance Officers. They’re pioneering Project Libertas – or as they affectionately call it, the Roll Patrol.

Their wish for you this Christmas? To feel good as you join them in the spirit of Christmas giving – by supporting more programs, like the MDNSW and Coogee Surf Lifesaving partnership, with a kind donation today.

Here’s how Scott and Pat are giving back this Christmas and how you can do the same!

Scott and Patrick are the type of people who grab life by the horns and seize every opportunity to try something new. They are driven to give back to their community however they can.

But they haven’t always felt like they could.

At the age of just 12, Patrick lost the ability to walk due to Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD), a degenerative muscle weakening disease. It was a moment that
left him feeling hopeless.

“I can remember the exact moment where I knew I wasn’t going to walk again,” Patrick says. “I was sitting on my balcony with a walker, trying and trying to get up. But I knew I wasn’t going to get up again. In moments like that, you really go to the worst of your thoughts and think: ‘there’s nothing for me now’.”

Can you imagine being so young, and feeling like there’s no future for you?

It’s experiences like Patrick’s that drive us to ask for your help to fund our programs. Because for Patrick, they were life changing. After meeting his best mate at MDNSW’s Adventure Camp 10 years ago, he’s never looked back.

“My mindset now is that there’s too much for me to do,” Patrick says. “I’ve got so many opportunities. Like Project Libertas – you wouldn’t even think for a minute that someone in a wheelchair would be able to be part of surf lifesaving. But we are.”

Thanks to the support of donors like you, Patrick and Scott are empowered to take every opportunity given to them – and they use those opportunities to give back to the people around them.

We want to empower more people to find their passions, like Scott and Patrick have. Will you help us? Your donation will help us grow other projects, like this one, to support young people living with neuromuscular conditions.

From all of us at MDNSW, and from the Roll Patrol, Scott and Patrick, we wish you a Merry Christmas and a wonderful holiday season.
