Peer Connect Retreat heads to Parramatta

Over the weekend of 26 – 28 May a group of 20 people with NMCs and their partners/carers attended our Peer Connect Retreat at Parramatta. It was a great opportunity for participants, who travelled from all over NSW and the ACT, to get away from their usual routines and connect with other adults with neuromuscular conditions.

Participants enjoyed a delicious 3 course group dinner on Friday night, followed by a sharing circle and fun games. There was plenty of conversation and laughs over a long buffet brekkie and then it was free time for the couples to get out in the sunshine, explore the area, wander along the riverside, Parramatta Park and a spot of shopping. Some even met Jad from Gogglebox at the trendy MISC café! On Saturday one couple from out of town took the opportunity to experience VIVID at Taronga while the rest of the group shared a Lebanese Banquet.

Everyone said that they loved the chance to make new friends, connect with others who ‘get it’ and know that everyone in the group were looking out for each other. Here’s what the participants had to say about their experience:

“The weekend was so good; sharing experiences, accepting each other’s similarities and differences. Also feeling safe and cared for by each other.” – Jo

“I found it interesting to meet other people with muscular dystrophy and to hear about how they deal with the challenges they face. I enjoyed socialising and getting to know people at the dinners, social activities and games we took part in. And being able to visit the historic parts of Parramatta including Old Government House, St John’s Anglican Church and the Female Factory was a bonus. I’m looking forward to the next Peer Connect Retreat.” – Victoria

“The experience at the retreats is really positive and I always come away from the retreat with a feeling of not being alone with MD and you always make new friends and get some good info from others.” – Peter
